Farmers Rights

The Future of Food  tells the story of Percy Schmeiser and other farmers and how Monsanto has gone after them for stealing Monsanto’s intellectual property rights. All the farmers did was go about their business. Somehow some of the seed that Monsanto patented got on the farmers land. In Percy’s case the seed blew off a truck. Monsanto came on their land, took the plants back to the lab, and when the plants came back as the GM variety Monsanto sued them. Most of the farmers paid just because they didn’t want to go through a lawsuit with a corporation who had more money than God. They didn’t want to lose their farms. So they paid the fine. Percy and a few fought  but the decision was held up by the judge. The farmer loses out in more ways than one here. He has to burn his saved seed to make sure he doesn’t grow the GM seed again or start planting the GM seed all the time and lose control over what he plants. Here is Mr. Schmeiser’s story.
