GM Patents

Big companies now have the right to patent not only genetically modified food but all life except a human. They can own the genetic rights to a certain type of plant, or a pig, as you can see in the video, or any living thing. By owning the patent right to that gene or species they have control over the intellectual property rights to that species. The animals and plants  that these farmers are growing now become the property of the big corporation? I haven't quite figured out how that will play out yet. But by people being able to control the rights to genetic species we lose and the world loses one thing necessary to continue our evolutionary survival. That is genetic variation. If the coporations own a species and decide it's not profitable so they quit growing it and other farmers don't have the right to grow that species. That species ends up dying off. That species may have been the only plant, or animal that could survive a certain environmental situation in the future. This could mean devastation to all of us.

  1. Even with genetic modification couldn’t there be variation in the animals and plants? DNA sequences do not always get copied properly causing a mutation.
