What Can We Do? Updated 1/28/2008

Most of the solution is to hit the multinational corporations who only care about their profits in their pocketbooks. But first things first.

1. Click here to find your elected officials, from the President on down. Tell them you want your food labeled if it’s genetically modified.  Tell them it’s not right to patent nature. If you have never written to an elected official before now is the time.

2. Read the labels on the foods you buy. Find out what is in the food you eat.

3. Don’t buy products with Genetically Modified ingredients if you can help it. That means stay away from products that have high fructose corn syrup, or soy beans in them. Most products with corn in them today have genetically modified corn in some form or another. This list will increase as I learn more.

3. Don’t buy products from companies that won’t label their food GM, or who sell GMO seeds, or products. These would be companies like:

  •
    •  Monsanto, who also produces Round Up – This link will take you to the Organic Consumer’s Association where you can read all about the kind of company Monsanto is. Profit no matter who it hurts. You decide what you think.  You can join the millions against Monsanto and send a fax to the company for free.
    • Zeneca
    •  This list will get longer in the weeks to come.

4. Buy products from organic food sources, food co-ops, local growers. Why food co-ops? Because they generally have enough consumer concious people working for them who care about what they eat that they know and can tell you what is in their products. Not always, but more than the regular grocers, who sell the main stream products. Look at the organization of your average grocery store. They have a whole isle dedicated mainly to soda pop, the main ingredient of which is high fructose corn syrup. This is the main ingredient that you will find genetically modified. Yes, there may be high fructose corn syrup and things that are not so healthy at a food co-op, but on the whole the food is much healthier.

GMOs & the Next President
of the United States
During 2007, The Campaign generated thousands of letters into the offices of the presidential candidates. As a result, all the Democratic candidates are on board in support of mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods if elected President. Unfortunately, except for Representative Ron Paul, we have not had the same success with the Republican candidates. Please click here to participate in the effort to get the Republican candidates to take a position on this important issue.
