Links to Hope!
I would like to think that it’s not all bad news. That Americans and the way corporate America does business will begin to give more than lip service to the word Sustainability. This website from offers me some hope for change.
State of the World 2008: Innovations for a Sustainable Economy
Another website called Redefining Progress: The Nature of Economics has another alternative to measuring growth in the economy, much different from the way the GDP measures progress. It’s called the Genuine Progress Indicator or GPI. The GPI starts with the same personal consumption data that the GDP is based on, but then makes some crucial distinctions. It adjusts for factors such as income distribution, adds factors such as the value of household and volunteer work, and subtracts factors such as the costs of crime and pollution. This seems to be a much more realistic model of actual health and sustainability present in a country. When these more realistic factors are taken into account, I believe we get a more accurate picture of our economic welfare not just in monetary terms, but in the well being of the people.
